How difficult is the Kashmir Great Lakes trek?
KGL is a Himalayan trek. Walking considerable distances everyday makes it a bit strenuous as well. At the same time it has a rest day once you reach Gangabal twin lakes camp. This is a welcome opportunity as it helps in recuperation before your long descent to Naranag. That is why we rate it 6.5/10 on a grade of physicality scale.
The fairly long ~ 65 Km trail has few ups and downs as well (refer to the altitude profile graph above). Water bodies/lakes are at the base of the mountains and usually you will cross a pass or ridge like Gadsar or Satsar and followed by a descent to the next valley and lake(s). So prepare for some easy to moderate ascents and descents during the trek. The trek from basecamp to Nichnai has moderate grade of ascent with a relatively steep gradient in the initial couple of hours.
When you go up on a mountain trail, eventually you need to get down. Here in KGL trek almost all the altitude loss, i.e. your climb down on the hike is on the last day of the trek. To note that more than 1000 m/3300 ft descent in a span of 11 Km. Use walking sticks and knee cap particularly who may have prior knee conditions/injuries or suspect one.
Is KGL trek suitable for beginners?
At the same time there are encouraging parameters for beginners as well. While the highest altitude on this hike is below 14000 ft (4200 m/13775 ft), all camps are more or less in between 11500 to 12200 ft. In between we climb higher although sleep at a lower altitude, following the “walk high, sleep low” mantra of acclimatisation.
So you can understand that KGL is not a trek to take casually. It is ideal for hikers with few prior experiences or even for the beginners who have pretty good physical fitness and leading an active healthy life. Do check the Guidelines for treks so that you are comfortable on the trail.
Weather pattern and best time for Kashmir Great Lakes trek:
Kashmir treks are best done between July to September and so is KGL trek. There are no theoretical summer monsoons in Kashmir. This region receives maximum rainfall during winters due to the western disturbances.
Season starts as early as the later half of June when snow becomes minimum. Although there is no monsoon, but July and August do get rain showers. On mountains afternoon showers are common in summer and monsoon. Due to rain and warmer temperatures valleys turn greener with vibrant wildflowers.
From September autumn sets in. Rains are minimal during this month of the season. Meadows turn yellow to golden as we move on. Shepherds and Bakkarwals return to their base with their cattle after the grazing season.
Finally in our opinion mid July to late August is the best window to visit Kashmir Great Lakes trail within the possible season of late June to early October.
What type of clothing should I bring for this trek?
It is important to carry proper clothing in this trek. We recommend to use “three layers” of clothing in the campsite during early morning or evening, while you are outside tent.
A quick dry base layer (Dry-fit t-shirt).
A warm jacket (Double layer or Fleece jacket ) as middle layer.
A windproof cum waterproof with hood as the outer layer.
Additionally you would require a rucksack and a decent trekking shoe.

Water Skiing
Skiing is considered to be one of the prime extreme sports in the adventurous sport, but water skiing is something that allows a water sport lover to make a splash at the oceanic depths of the sea world. It is just like surfing in many ways, here too you do get to balance on the ski board, but a strong sensory power is also required here.
Water sports are the fun making aspect of Kashmir. The Dal and Nagin lakes in Srinagar and the Manasbal Lake, 32-km from Srinagar are the best places for water-skiing.
The largest area of the Dal, the Boddal, has privately owned 'bathing boats', water-skies and trained.
Instructors
There are more bathing boats at the Nagin Lake and also a government run Institute to guide the lovers of Water Sports. The Nagin lake too has trained instructors and is more preferred because of its clean water.
The Treasured Location In Isolation
Manasbal Lake, accessible from Srinagar by road, is isolated from the rest of the world by the hills that surround it. Tranquil with a mirror like gloss on its base makes Manasbal an attractive water sports resort. One can hire the latest water-skiing equipment and also specially trained instructors for the beginners here. All through the summer season in Kashmir - starting from May to the end of August - the water of the lakes in Kashmir is pleasant for water sports. The Tourist's huts and bungalows are available on all the above resorts to make the stay on these places a memorable and comfortable one.

River Rafting in Ladakh
River rafting in Ladakh is difficult to find anywhere else in the world. It provides the best opportunity to enjoy and observe the natural beauty of the awesome landscapes with snow-covered mountain peaks, deep gorges, hillside villages, towering hilltop monasteries and glimpses of the unique wildlife. Ladakh provides an array of rafting options on the Indus and its main tributaries.
The best stretch for professionally guided runs in white water is on the Indus between Spituk and Nimu or Saspol, which rates 2 to 3 in the international river grading scale of 1 to 6. Upstream of Spituk, the Indus has the easiest stretch up to Karu, which is ideal for beginners training. In recent years, running the Indus has become a popular option and features on the itinerary of most travelers.
The most difficult but enthusing rafting option is available on the Zanskar River, along its daring course through a gorge in the Zanskar Mountains, between Padum and Nimu. This is fitted only for well-organized white-water expeditions, framed for about a week of rafting and camping in complete wilderness. It is necessary that the participants are trained rafters themselves while the arrangements are assigned to a reliable professional agency. Adequate arrangement for rescue operation is an important prerequisite for undertaking this white-water expedition.
The Two River Stretches
Two different stretches of the river are engaged: from Spituk to the Indus Zanskar unites at Nimmu, and from Nimmu to the ancient temple complex at Alchi. Skilled rafters may also be desirous to try the more challenging route between Alchi and Khalsi, which takes in the kilometre long series of rapids at Nurla.
Several agents around Fort Road arrange white water rafting on the Indus, who bring up the equipment for rafting during the season. One should book tickets at least a day in advance, preferably through the tour agent themselves.

Indus River as well as its major tributaries in Ladakh offers a wide range of river rafting options. One of the best stretches on the Indus River is the one between Spituk and Nimu or Saspol. However, those new to river rafting must go for the easiest stretch upstream from Spituk up to Karu.
Zanskar River
Zanskar River in Ladakh has on offer some of the most difficult, but exciting, rafting options. One of these stretches is the one between Padum and Nimu, through a gorge in the Zanskar Mountains. However, this trek will take upto a week.

General Information:
Some of the best slopes in the country for beginners and intermediate skiers are available at Gulmarg. Skiing equipment is available on hire from the Ski-Shop. In winter, Gulmarg's natural slopes and inclines turn into the country’s premier skiing resort. Not all tourists who visit in winter come for skiing - some simply are there to watch the skiing or to enjoy a holiday in the snow, sledging and taking snow scooters or trekking. Many of these are infected with the excitement of the skiers, and have donned their first pair of skis within a short while of their arrival.
Of numerous slopes, there are a few which are serviced by ski lifts. Most of the skiing is centered on these slopes, which are suited to beginners and intermediate level skiers, with ski runs ranging from 200 m to 3kms. Instructors are available for both levels.
Advanced Skiers
There are also a number of slopes of varying lengths and gradients which suit more experienced and adventurous skiers. These runs do not have ski lifts, but can be reached by snowmobile or by trekking up the mountain. These runs offer adventurous skier the immense advantage of being a lot less crowded than the popular, ski lift serviced slopes.
Advanced skiers often trek in the snow for several hours to the very top of Apharwat Peak, to make a descent lasting 30 minutes. Advanced skiers can also make fantastic runs of 3kms down from Kongdori, with the advent of the Gulmarg Gondola Cable Car service to Kongdori.
Other Activities
To bogeying is a popular and fun activity that requires no skill. A flat wooden board is taken up the hill and allowed to slide downhill on the snow-covered slopes without a navigator. Great fun for those with a head for speed and a love for letting loose in the snow! Sledges as well as sledge-pullers are always available on hire. There are also snow scooters and snow-bobbing, neither of which require special skills, and both of which are a good break from the ski-runs once in a while
